HIRO GALLERY IZUOKAWA is pleased to present the solo exhibition by Ryo Shimizu (1977- ), who focuses on the relationship between space and its background, and mainly uses letters in his works, following the first part in this early summer.

In this exhibition, Shimizu will present a two-part installation based on his ongoing research and exploration of the topography, flora, and fauna of the Izu Peninsula since 2020, which will also explore the merits and demerits of the invention of letters or the people before letters. It will inspect the "form" behind the letters and languages used in daily life.

The topographical formation of the Izu Peninsula and the evolution of religious beliefs coincide with the artist's upbringing. In the background, an ancient clan involved in manufacturing can be seen. The second part of the exhibition, titled "a practitioner," is a video-based installation that combines various forms of expression, such as structures, water, stones, and changes in the thermal environment, with the theme of a grand journey through this mysterious fortune.

The exhibition title, "beginning of the wave," refers to the beginning of things, and "apophenia" refers to the perceptual action of finding regularity and relevance in seemingly unrelated information, making the entire space an experience as an artwork. Please enjoy the installation works, which are only presented in this exhibition, that delve deeply into and express the history and culture of the Izu Peninsula from a unique point of view.

空間とその背景との関係性に着目し、主に文字を用いた作品を制作する清水玲（しみず・りょう　1977 - ）の個展を、初夏の第一部に引き続きヒロ画廊伊豆大川にて開催いたします。

本展覧会では、清水玲が2020年より継続的に行っている伊⾖半島を中⼼とした地形や動植物の調査、踏査をもとに、⽂字を持つ以前の⼈間、あるいは⽂字の発明がもたらした功罪を題材にしたインスタレーションを二部構成で展開します。いまを⽣きる私たちがあたりまえのように⽤いる⽂字と⾔葉の背景にある「かたち」を探ります。

伊豆半島の地形の成り立ちと信仰のかたちの変遷は、奇しくも作家の生い立ちと重なり、その背景には、ものづくりに関わる古代のある氏族の存在が見え隠れします。「験（しるし）を修める」と題した第二部では、この不思議な仕合わせを巡る壮大な旅路を主題に、構造物や水、石、温熱環境の変化等、様々な表現形態を組み合わせながら、映像を中心としたインスタレーションを展開します。

展覧会タイトルの「波の始まり」は物事の始まりを、「アポフェニア」は一見関係の無い情報の中から規則性や関連性を見出す知覚作用を意味し、空間全体を作品として体験していただく展覧会です。伊豆半島の歴史や文化を独自の視点で深く掘り下げて表現した、本展覧会限りのインスタレーション作品をぜひご高覧くださいませ。
