Daisuke Samejima, known for his "Flatball" series, which depicts 360° spherical images of street scenes that everyone has seen somewhere and anywhere, will hold his first overseas solo exhibition at the Seaside Gallery in Taiwan.

The Seaside Gallery is located in Pingtung County, the southernmost tip of Taiwan, close to the scenic resort area of Kenting. Originally a waiting room for ships, the building was renovated and reborn as an art museum by the sea. The museum has hosted exhibitions by international artists such as Kenji Yanobe, Theo Jansen, and Oskar Oiwa. It is a popular tourist attraction that usually attracts more than 100,000 visitors during its three-month exhibition period.

This exhibition will feature a new flat ball 240cm in diameter [the largest in the artist's career], a new "Pingtung" signboard, with motifs of everyday scenes from Pingtung County, and a selection of his past works.

The opening reception was held on August 23, and Pingtung County Magistrate Chou Chun-mi attended. Many local press members also participated, which was a great success. A balloon with a diameter of 4 meters, created from 3D data based on a Flatball in 17 cm diameter, was displayed outdoors, surprising many visitors.

The exhibition was open to the public from the following day, the 24th. Many visitors came to the exhibition from the first day, and the waiting line for admission was the longest in the museum's history of exhibitions.

展覧会初日風景

誰もがどこかで見たような、どこにでもある街角の風景を球面上で360°繋げて描いた「Flatball」で知られる鮫島大輔の海外初個展を、台湾の看海美術館にて開催いたします。

看海美術館は、風光明媚なリゾートエリアである墾丁にほど近い、台湾最南端の屏東県に位置しております。もともとは船の待合室だった建物を改装し、海沿いの美術館として新たに生まれ変わりました。これまでにヤノベケンジ氏、テオ・ヤンセン氏、大岩オスカール氏など、国際的なアーティストの展覧会を開催しており、３カ月間の会期中に10万人以上が訪れる人気の観光スポットです。

本展では、屏東県の日常の風景をモチーフにした、作家のキャリアにおいて最大の直径240cmのフラットボールの新作や、「屏東」看板の新作、さらには過去の代表作を一堂に展示いたします。
