A traveling exhibition that rotates 4 museums throughout Japan, “Box Art Exhibition,” was held from July 4th 2001 to May 26th 2002. Ugo Cortesi, an Italian artist, exhibits from HIRO GALLERY.

Box Art is namely the art of boxes. It means the works that utilize the world of “the inside” and “the outside” of boxes, the mystique and presence generated by dividing space.

First, children find a box that he can store his treasures in secret from everybody when they want to keep something they cherish. The common, little items that are not important for others, got entered into the special “boxes,” their ordinariness vanishes, then each one of them are integrated into a treasure. Isn’t it possible that the theme of boxes attract the contemporary artists because the theme has the seemingly inconsistent components such as “ordinaries of life” and “original sensitivity field” ? Every color surrounded by small boxes in the Ugo Cortesi’s works, never mingles with other colors defended by its four outside walls. The rigid definition symbolizes the rule that Cortesi, who is an artist and also a doctor, controls himself by. “To have two souls as an artist and a doctor, the wall is indispensable,” Cortesi says.

Therefore doctor Ugo Cortesi and U-Box can live together only if they are well separated from rigid barriers and hard rules. [The suffering humanity which daily asks help to the doctor] must not invade the colour gaiety, as this gaiety must not pass away into the daily pain.

2001年7月4日から2002年5月26日にかけて、全国4美術館を巡回する「Box Art 展」が開催されました。ヒロ画廊からはイタリアのアーティスト、ウーゴ・コルテシが出展しました。

ボックス・アートは文字通り箱の芸術です。それは空間を囲うことで生まれる箱の「なか」と「そと」の世界、その神秘性や存在感などを芸術表現として取り入れた作品のことをさします。

「子供は自分が本当に大切にしているものをとっておきたい時に、誰にも秘密に大事にしまっておける箱をまずみつけるであろう。他人にとってはたわいのない身のまわりの小物も、自分だけの世界「箱」に入ることによって、日常性が消し去られ、それぞれが一つになって宝物となる。箱の主題が現代作家を魅了するのは、「身のまわりにある日常」と、「独自の感性の世界」という一見して矛盾した要素を持ち備えているあたりにあるのではないだろうか？」(開催概要より)

ウーゴ・コルテシ作品の小さな箱に囲われた一つ一つの色は、四方の壁に守られて他の色と交じり合うことはありません。その峻厳とした区別は、芸術家でもあり医者でもあるコルテシが自らを律するルールを象徴しています。一人の人間の中に芸術家と医者として二つの魂を宿すために、その壁は必要不可欠だと作家は語ります。

「医者としての私と作家としての私は厳格な境界とルールで隔てられて初めて共に存在することができます。日々医者に助けを求め苦む人間は絵画の色彩の与える悦びを侵してはならないし、それはこの悦びが日々の病のもたらす痛みの中に消え去ってはならないのと同じです。」(ウーゴ・コルテシ)
