Italian Cultural Institute Tokyo held the first exhibition in Japan of Oliviero Bertolaso, an Italian Sculptor. This exhibition featured the artist’s career and works of this 15 years.

Oliviero Bertolaso is an Italian sculptor, born in Verona in 1971. With the guidance of his uncle, an artist who had taught at the art academy in Germany, he started to become familiar with art. He attended the Art School in Ravenna, where he learned the basics of drawing and completed his education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara. When he went to the art schools, he studied at the studios of Max Bill, Larry Kirkland. And after the schools he also studied at the studio of the sculptor Marcello Tommasi. He attended many group exhibitions such as Vissuto Scultoreo, Palazzo Pretorio,Volterra [2004], Sculture nello spazio Pubblico, Carrara [2009], Incontri - Confronti, Palazzo Minucci Solaini, Volterra [2012]. And he held a one-man show “Non dire gatto...” in Carrara. Since 2005, as well as producing his own artworks, he is engaged in the direction to make the Foundation of Tatsumi Oki, a Japanese sculptor.

Many ingredients are used for making his works such as marble, bronze, wood, iron and so on. In his works “the oppressed people” are always expressed. They are not the somebody else in the long distance away, but ourselves who suffer from the harshness of our time everyday.

東京・九段下のイタリア文化会館にてイタリアの彫刻家、オリヴィエロ・ベルトラーゾの日本初個展が開催されました。本展はベルトラーゾのこの１５年の歩みを集成した展覧会です。

オリヴィエロ・ベルトラーゾ（OLIVIERO BERTOLASO, １９７１-　）はイタリア・ヴェローナ生まれの彫刻家です。ドイツの美大で教鞭を執っていた画家の叔父の影響で早いうちから芸術に親しみ、ラヴェンナ、 カッラーラの美術学校で学びます。学生時代にはマックス・ビルやラリー・カークランドのアトリエで学び、卒業後 はマルチェッロ・トンマージのアトリエで研鑽を積みました。Vissuto Scultoreo（ヴォルテッラ, 2004年）、Sculture nello spazio pubblico（カッラーラ, 2009年）、Incontri – Confronti（ヴォルテッラ, 2012年）など多数のグループ展に参加し、2012年には個展「Non dire gatto...」を開催しています。2005年からは制作活動の傍ら、日本人彫刻家、大木逹美の財団建設のための活動にも携わっています。

大理石、ブロンズ、木、鉄など様々な素材を使用したベルトラーゾの作品では一貫して「虐げられる弱者」が表現されています。それはどこか遠いところにいる他人ではなく、現代の残酷さに日々苦しむ我々自身のあり方でもあります。
