Chimei Hamada's copperplate prints were shown at an exhibition, “Tokyo 1955-1970: A New Avant-Garde,” in the Museum of Modern Art [MoMA].

Well known as “MoMA,” the Museum of Modern Art was founded by Lillie P. Bliss, Mary Quinn Sullivan and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller in 1929. This museum has always led the scene of modern and contemporary art after 20th century by its ambitious and innovative projects and well deserves one of the greatest museums in the world.

This exhibition is hosted by the Museum of Modern Art and the Japan Foundation. After the defeat in the WWⅡ, Japan experienced a great economic growth from the mid 1950s to 1960s. And the various artistic movements that have much influence on even our day arose in the metropolitan Tokyo in parallel with that. “Tokyo 1955-1970: A New Avant-Garde” introduces the works at the time of wide-ranged genres including painting, sculpture, video, and so on.

Also for this exhibition, Chimei Hamada's copperplate prints were collected in this museum. His sensitive works, which sublimate the experience in the WWⅡ into the universal artistic quality, are highly evaluated.

“MoMA（モマ）”の略称で親しまれるニューヨーク近代美術館（The Museum of Modern Art）は、1929年にL.P.ブリス、C.J.サリヴァン夫人およびJ.D.ロックフェラー2世夫人の３人によって設立されました。従来の美術の枠組みにとらわれない意欲的かつ斬新な企画で、２０世紀以降の近現代美術を常にリードしてきた世界屈指の美術館です。

本展覧会はニューヨーク近代美術館と国際交流基金の主催により開催されます。敗戦後の日本は1950年代半ばから1960年代にかけて大きな経済成長を遂げますが、それと平行して首都の東京では現代にも大きな影響を与える様々な芸術運動が展開されました。「TOKYO 1955-1970：新しい前衛」展は、当時の作品を平面、立体、映像など幅広いジャンルにわたって紹介する展覧会です。

この展覧会に合わせ、浜田知明の銅版画が同美術館に収蔵されました。第二次世界大戦での従軍体験を、普遍的な芸術性に昇華させた繊細な作品が高く評価されました。
