The Divine Comedy was represented in 103 pieces of drawings by Cecco Bonanotte, the leading contemporary Italian artist who made the bronze portal of the Vatican Museums. The exhibition was held at the Pazzi’s Chapel, which are renowned for its architecture by Filippo Brunelleschi, who was one of the foremost architects of the Italian Renaissance, in Opera di Santa Croce, Florence.

This exhibition was an exceptional one cosponsored by the greatest museums in Italy including Opera di Santa Croce, that were also the venue, Vatican Museums and Uffizi Gallery. It was held from Oct. 9th, 2004 to Jan. 9th, 2005 and got great attention. 103 works by Bonanotte were highly valued for its overwhelming creativity and expression by superior technique of sketch, so Uffizi Gallery, which is well known for its great collection of paintings of the Italian Renaissance, acquired them.

There is something discontinuous and at the same time melodious in the interpretation of the Comedy offered to us by Bonanotte. It is like bringing a shell up to the ear and listening to the sea breath. In this case the shell is the Poem, and the vast rumor that the artist has managed to capture while remaining enchanted by it and enchanting us spectators, admiring and a little fearful, comes from the depths of Poetry itself. 2000年にヴァチカン美術館の扉を制作したイタリアを代表する彫刻家、チェッコ・ボナノッテが103枚のデッサンで表現したダンテ「神曲」の展覧会が開催されました。会場にはダンテの故郷であるフィレンツェのサンタ・クローチェ教会内にあるパッツィ礼拝堂が選ばれました。同礼拝堂は、ルネッサンス期の巨匠ブルネリスキによる建築で有名です。

同展は会場となったサンタ・クローチェ美術館、ヴァチカン美術館、ウフィッツィ美術館といったイタリア本土最高峰の美術館の協同主催という異例の展覧会で、2004年10月9日-2005年1月9日の間に開催され、大きな注目を浴びました。当展覧会で展示されたボナノッテの作品103点は、その圧倒的な創造性、デッサン力による表現が評価され、その後フィレンツェのルネッサンス絵画の殿堂、ウフィッツィ美術館の所蔵品となりました。

「ボナノッテが我々に提示する『神曲』の解釈には、どこか一定しない、それでいて軽やかな調べを奏でるが如きところがある。あたかも貝殻を耳にあて、海の息づかいを聴くような趣きである。この場合、貝殻とは『神曲』のことだ。ボナノッテは、『神曲』の深遠広大な世界から響いてくるざわめきに耳を澄ませて、それらを拾い集め、幻惑から覚めぬうちに見事な手並みで作品化した。そのざわめきは、かすかな畏怖とともに、我々をも幻惑し感嘆させずにはおかない。」(アントニオ・パオルッツィ　前文化大臣、フィレンツェ美術館特別監督局総監)
