“La Porta Nuova” New door of the Vatican Museums

An Italian sculptor Cecco Bonanotte produced a large bronze portal for the new entrance of the Vatican Museums. Located in Vatican City, They are the most massive museums in the world that collect and exhibit the items gathered by successive popes.

The Pope at the time, John Paul II, commissioned him to produce the bronze portal over 8 meters height for the new entrance to the Museums. The Vatican installed the portal on the Great Jubilee, 2000, and held a grand ceremony. Bonanotte sculpted twelve popes who contributed the art history inside the door.

In the ceremony, John Paul II expressed his sincere appreciation to Cecco Bonanotte with these words below.

“I congratulate... the sculptor Cecco Bonanotte, maker of the portal of the new entrance. The theme of Creation, symbolically evoked by him, is well attuned to that of art, and seems to invite the visitor to recognize with wonder the mystery of the creator spirit in the universe, in living beings and especially in the human person.”

イタリアの彫刻家、チェッコ・ボナノッテがヴァチカン美術館新正面入口のためのブロンズ大扉を制作しました。ヴァチカン美術館はヴァチカン市国に位置する、歴代ローマ教皇の収集品を収蔵展示する世界最大級の美術館です。

その入口のための高さ８メートルを超える大扉の制作を当時の教皇ヨハネ・パウロ二世に依頼され、大聖年の2000年に設置。盛大なセレモニーが催されました。大扉の内側には、芸術の歴史に寄与した12人の教皇を表した彫刻が設置されました。

セレモニーではヨハネ・パウロ二世が以下のスピーチでチェッコ・ボナノッテに深い敬意を表しています。

「新しい入口の大扉を制作したチェッコ・ボナノッテに、お祝いを申し上げたいと思います。彼が象徴的に表現した創作のテーマは、芸術のテーマに充分即したものであり、見学者に対して、宇宙、生物、とりわけ人間の中に創造主の精神の神秘を驚きをもって見出すよう促しているように思います」
